Marta Mathatas, 1974

Marta is a retired United Methodist pastor who served numerous churches in a variety of settings during her 45-year career in Iowa, Maryland and Ohio, where she lives now, in Wooster. She remains active in the church, serves as a guest preacher in the area, and works as a hospice volunteer.

She has been active in many church, community, school and political organizations throughout her career, including serving as chair of the East Ohio Association of Clergywomen and of her local Democratic precinct.

She holds a master’s of divinity degree from Wesley Seminary, Washington, D.C., and studied clinical pastoral education at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.

Marta grew up in Carlisle, Iowa. At Cornell (maiden name: Wherry) she majored in English and history, and was president of her dormitory, editor of the Royal Purple, active in student government and member of Gamma Delta Iota. Cornell, she wrote, provided her with “lifelong friends, the ability to research and write, organize thoughts, and develop leadership skills.”

She was a class agent for many years.

Marta’s husband, DeLoe, is a metallurgical engineer. They have three sons and eight grandchildren.
